Tips n’ Tricks – Vinyl Window Trim Color

white wall tire vinyl window optionsVinyl windows can be kind of tricky when it comes to trim colors – they are almost always stark white and generally cannot be painted (see below). Some lean to matching trim color to the vinyl – this gives a hospital-feeling white-on-white look that lacks visual interest. It also ranks a solid “Zero” on the Warmth scale.

The other end of the spectrum is the high contrast approach. This lacks subtlety and, just like whitewall tires, isn’t suited for most homes. Both white-on-white and dark-on-white are just too harsh a contrast for most tastes.

Tips For Painting Trim

White Trim paintTrim color, especially for interiors, often defaults to a generic “white”. Color consultant Diane Stewart with Color Sense Consulting explains very clearly why there’s more to it than meets the eye.

“Trim is often an afterthought, but it should be the right color to complement the walls. Trim is sort of like the black outline around illustrations, or piping on a fabric. It should highlight and accent the main attraction in the middle, but it’s not meant to draw attention to itself. Unfortunately, that’s just what bright white trim does. I’m not sure why this became popular, but I try to steer my clients away from it as much as possible.

Color Tips for Exterior Paint

After: harmonious colors unify the whole.

These tips from Diane Stewart, Color & Design Consultant at Color Sense Consulting. With this home, Diane favors softer contrasts and warmer tones that help the whole to blend with the landscape. Older homes or new, Diane consistently delights her customers through both the color process and the final results.

Bright white paint for trim is overdone. It looks harsh and artificial, and causes glare in sunlight. Instead, off-white, cream, putty, or light gray will provide a softer contrast.

Choose the Right Paint Sheen

Paint sheen crestwood interior
Sheen describes the amount of light reflected.

Everybody knows about color; not many know about sheen. But it is just as  important when choosing paints. So here we go!

Sheen is another way to say “light reflectance”. Kitchen cabinets are usually higher-gloss surfaces and so reflect more light that most ceilings (flat sheen).

One is not better than the other – but there are trade-offs and considerations in choosing which sheen is best for a particular application.

Painting Interior Trim – Joint Gaps

Interior Trim - gaps kansas city painter crestwood paintingSomething we see quite often on interior projects is the different styles of interior carpentry and the effects that those styles have on a painted finish. Traditional styles tend to hide the effects of wood movement from

  • Seasonal expansion and contraction
  • House settling or movement

This is because the different component pieces never join flat-edge to flat-edge. paint prep kansas city crestwood painting miter joint gapYou can see in the picture how this plays out. Older craftsmen were aware of wood movement and used that knowledge to “design-out” those effects. The wood still moves – it’s just not as noticeable to the eye.

Newer construction (“newer” being almost anything since 1940) is different. The post-war Baby Boom required lots of housing built quickly. For both economics and speed of construction miter joints were used. This was to minimize the number of pieces, the number of cuts and therefore the labor cost. Find more info on New Wood vs Old Wood.

The downside to all this efficiency is joint gaps. Buildings move and seasons change – gaps happen. interior trim crestwood painting kansas cityTo the right there’s a miter joint that’s opened up. Just below is a similar joint whose surfaces don’t match and therefore have an uneven appearance.

If you’ve got joint problems (sorry – painters’s humor) give Crestwood Painting a call today.

The painting prep process for this situation is similar to traditional joinery, but the long-term effects are very different. Scrape or sand excess paint or caulk, prime as needed and re-caulk the joint. Over time, these joints will open or mis-match – it’s just a consequence of design trade-offs.
